Where Ideas Connect
Visual communication is changing.
Visual communication is evolving alongside the ways in which people live, work and communicate. Contemporary audiences are increasingly multilingual, multicultural and connected across geographical and disciplinary boundaries.
At VCCL, we recognise that visual communication must respond to this changing landscape. Our approach considers the relationships between design, language, culture, technology and context, encouraging new ways of thinking about how visual communication can connect people and communicate meaning.
We are interested not only in how communication is designed, but also in who it is designed for, the contexts in which it operates, and how it can respond to the diversity of contemporary society.
Our Mission
VCCL’s mission is to contribute to the evolving field of visual communication through culturally informed and multidisciplinary education.
We provide an academic and creative environment in which visual communication can be explored across languages, cultures, disciplines and emerging technologies. Our approach connects critical thinking with creative practice, encouraging learners to question established conventions and explore new approaches to communication.
We aim to support learners in developing the knowledge, creative skills and critical awareness required to engage with diverse audiences and the changing contexts of contemporary creative practice
Our Vision
VCCL’s vision is to contribute to a future in which visual communication responds meaningfully to the complexity and diversity of contemporary society.
We envision a creative landscape where language, culture, technology and disciplinary knowledge come together to generate new forms of communication and creative practice.
Through education, creative practice and knowledge exchange, VCCL seeks to encourage practitioners who are curious, adaptable and prepared to contribute to the continuing development of visual communication.

Designing across languages and writing systems, with attention to how visual communication can create meaning across linguistic contexts.
Designing across cultures and contexts, recognising different perspectives, experiences and ways of understanding visual communication.
Connecting design with research, technology, communication and emerging creative practices to respond to the changing nature of the creative industry.
The creative industry is no longer defined by fixed boundaries.
Contemporary creative practice increasingly brings together graphic design, typography, branding, digital media, interaction, photography, moving image, technology, research and communication.
As these boundaries continue to shift, creative practitioners need more than specialist technical skills. They need to collaborate across disciplines, understand different audiences and contexts, work with emerging technologies and adapt their practice to changing professional environments.
VCCL encourages multidisciplinary thinking and transferable creative skills alongside disciplinary knowledge, preparing learners to respond to the evolving demands of contemporary creative practice.
